Prefetture and Questure

To apply for family reunification you must contact the Prefecture that, after hearing the opinion of the Questura, issue a clearance valid 180 days, within which the family member who wants to be reunited must report to the Italian Embassy and apply for a visa to enter Italy.

The prefettture also issue the nulla osta for entry for employees, within the quotas set annually by the flows decree. In this case, is the employer who must require the nulla osta, and the Prefettura, after hearing the opinion of the Questura and the Provincial Directorate of Work, issue the clearance.

Then, the employer must send the nulla osta to the employee and this one must go to the Italian Embassy with the clearance. The embassy will issue a visa  for a period of 180 days, and within that time he must arrive in Italy.

Anyway, within eight days after the entry into any country belonging to 'the SchengenArea, the employee must make request for a Residence Permit for employment purposes.

The Schengen Area currently includes 22 EUMember States - Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia - and three associated countriesoutside the EU, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland.

The Questure are the offices of the State Police. They have provincial competence and in Sardinia there are 4, corresponding to the historical provinces (Cagliari, Oristano, Sassari and Nuoro).

The Questura works under the Ministry of the Interior and for this reason is responsible for issuing Residence Permits and for the control and expulsion of foreigners  who are not in compliance with the permit.

Upon completion of the  application form to request the issue of residence permit (the one available at the post office) you will be summoned to the Questura, to integrate the documentation with the original documents and your passport photo, and to release your fingerprint.

On the website of the State Police, in the section called "stranieri" (foreigners), you can check the progress of your practice. Print this page and keep it with you when you’ll come to the Questura called for the withdrawal of the permit. Without this print you will not be issued the permit.
